Defensive lapses and failing to avail scoring opportunities led Bangladesh national team to a 3-1 defeat against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd in a practice match held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday.

The national team’s defence was let down by Rezaul Karim Reza whose unnecessary tackle on Jamal defender Arup Baidya presented Sheikh Jamal with a penalty in the 12th minute of the match.

Sunday Chizoba converted the spot kick in his third attempt after the first two were disqualified.

Another defence blunder by the national team while clearing a corner by Arup Baidya in the 15th minute helped Mike Otojareri double the margin. He found ample space to head home from the middle of the box.

A total of three defenders failed to clear another cross by Sunday Chizoba in the 28th minute and Sheikh Jamal midfielder Chinedu Ezimorah made no mistake to score the third with a low header.

A number of chances fell on Bangladesh forwards’ way, but Mithun Chowdhury placed the ball over the crosspiece off a Shakil Ahmed square-pass in the 22nd minute while in the 38th minute Mithun failed to head a cross of Jahid Hossian inside the open net.

National forward Zahid Hasan Emily reduced the margin through a penalty in the 45th minute of the match. Jamal defender Hasan al Mamun brought Jahid down in the middle of the box.

National coach Saiful Bari Titu inserted two different teams in the either half of the match.

“I am not worried about the result as the opponent had six foreign players. Their presence made the difference,” said Titu.

“However, the blunders in the defence and the misses by the forwards are the points to be worried about. We did not play that bad, but the blunders let us down,” added Titu.

Joseph Affusi, the coach of Jamal took the result easy. “I think the national team players lacked the understanding among them. They need more time to get grouped” said Affussi.
